Western Australian sprint sensation Sasha Zhoya has won the prestigious 2018 Bay Sheffield 70m & 120m Gift double at Collie reserve in Glenelg.
In a blistering performance over the two days Melville athlete Zhoya (5m) has charged down local favourite Harrison Hunt (6.5m) in a nail biting 120m final. The win secures a unique and historical 70/120m double which has not been done for three decades. He has also pocketed over $16 000 in prize money in the process.
By winning the 2017 Hamersley Gift one month before and earning $1000 in the process, he was flown over to Collie reserve in Adelaide FREE by the WCAL to compete in two of the biggest races on the Australian Professional running calendar. The Bay Sheffield 70m Sprint & Open 120m Gift’s. A task so huge than no one has seen the double completed by the same athlete since 1989.
The free trip earned by Zhoya was handed to him by the WCAL who decided it was time to send a worthy contender and winner of a WA gift over for a crack at Australia’s largest tourism professional gift event. This amazing opportunity can only be provided in professional running environment with the West Coast and South Australian professional leagues working closely together. The Hamersley LAC has been fantastic to host the entry event over the past 7 years.
Sasha participated his first HLAC junior pro race when he was only 11yo. He won the same race one year later as a 12yo. After a few years continuing to run pro races (and a handy growth spurt) at 15 years old he has now transformed into one of the finest junior athletes in the world. Currently ranked No. 2 in the world over the 110m hurdles for his age. He also now has the financial support to help him continue comfortably in athletics. This opportunity would not have happened without the win of the 2017 Hamersley Gift and the support of the West Coast Athletic League.
“Bay Sheffield has been an amazing experience! Winning was good, of course, but it is the whole experience, as its atmosphere and the huge number of spectators which stick in my mind. Without winning the Hamersley Gift, I would not have gone to Adelaide… So, really, I own it to WCAL for sending me there in the first place”. “The first time I watched my sister participating to a WCAL event, she made $20. I was 9 year old, or maybe 10 at the time. I was so frustrated to be too young to participate. So, as soon as I could, I got into it. I did not win a thing for 2 or 3 years, not even close to making any finals! But I stuck to it, then I won the U14 HLAC Junior pro-run, then all the way to Bay Sheffield. Pretty awesome really! I need to thank all my coaches too. I train very hard and make huge sacrifices to my everyday life, but by the end, the hard work is worth it.” – Sasha Zhoya.

Zhoya on his way to the 131st Bay Sheffield after winning the 2017 WCAL Hamersley Gift !
Saturday 25th November 2017 was a perfect sunny day on the Hamersley Little Athletics ground for another superbly organised West Coast Athletics League pro-running event.
The special Hamersley pro gift celebrated the 30th anniversary of the WCAL with the major prizes attracting a range of extra talented athletes all determined to give a serious go at grabbing the free ticket to the Bay Sheffield Pro gift event in Adelaide on December 28th. But when it comes to a big prize, young back-marker Sasha Zhoya decided it was his to get! He made his mark from the start by winning his heat from a 7m mark (in 11.96) toppling Heptathlete Virginia Stasyszyn (12.17) on the finish line. They both decided to do a repeat at the final with Stasyszyn taking second place to Zhoya while other Heptathlete and last year’s runner up Kobi Nichols settled for third.
Two WA Masters athletes were in the finals with Mark Elms missing the podium by the smallest margin and Colin Smith ecstatic to be amongst the best!
Hamersley 120m Gift Open Placing: 1 Sasha Zhoya (7m) 11.84; 2 Virginia Stasyszyn (25.50) 12.24 ; 3 Kobi Nichols (20m) 12.31 ; 4 Mark Elms (26m) 12.33; 5 Adriaan Pelser (11m) 12.37; 6 Colin Smith (21.75) 12.41; 7 Kiara Reedingius (19.50) 12.43; 8 Taylor Sharpe (7.50m) 12.52.
In a tight finish and an impressive last 15m sprint by Iuan Hook, coached by Jason Moyle, who took out the Tony Krsticevic MLA 550m Gift from an 80m mark with WA Master athlete and Paraburdoo resident Mark Elms taking second place off 88m. Connor Desselkoen, coached by Matt Barber finished in 3rd place from 55m.
Placing: 1 Iuan Hook (80m) 1’10”8; 2 Mark Elms (88m) 1’11”4; 3 Connor Disselkoen (55m) 1’12”2; 4 Adam Hall (44m) 1’12”3; 5 Colin Smith (88m) ; 6 Emily Parker (120m) 1’12”5; 7 Virginia Stasyszyn (130m) 1’12”9; 10 Eleanor Disselkoen (100m) 1’15”3.
Upcoming Pro Runners fought hard and tight to get their print on the George Strickland 120mNovice Gift, but it seems Virginia Stasyszyn’s talent got the better of them all as she flew through the finish line in a time of 12.03, followed closely by WA Master Tony Johnson coached by Darren Rogers, then back marker Taylor Sharpe.
Placing: 1 Virginia Stasyszyn (25.5m) 12”03; Tony Johnson (19.5m) 12”22; Taylor Sharpe (7.5m) 12”45; Joshua Jones (11m) 12”47; 5 Gin Ang (25m) 12”78; 6 Iuan Hook (17m) 12”81; 7 Scott Andrew (9m) 12”96
Young guns displayed a show of promising talents in the U16 Dave Dilley “Keep On Running” 120mGift with 15 years old Joshua Jones starting from far back at 0m and winning in a time of 13”60. Taylah Cruttenden, coached by Russel Mathanda and wearing the white singlet finished in second place in a time of 14 flat off 5.25m while Fred Le Messurier settled for third.
It was an absolute ripper of a day and a fantastic 30th Anniversary celebration! We congratulate all athletes, and wish the best of luck to Sasha Zhoya in representing WA at the Bay Sheffield later on this year. The Bay Sheffield Gift will be LIVE streamed.

Dave Dilley U16 Junior 120m Gift
A top quality junior gift race with the scratch backmarker Joshua Jones (0m) facing stiff competition from multiple junior state sprint champion Taylah Cruttenden (5.25m) making her pro debut. They both have tough competition from the 2017 Mullewa Gift Champion Eleanor Disselkoen (7.75m). Australian U14 sprint hurdles champion speedster Skye Lankester (8.5m) should also feature in this race.
George Strickland Novice 120m Gift
The runners are looking to win their first pro gift with the main action coming from Taylor Sharpe (7.5m) making his pro debut. Scott Andrews (9m) looking to improve his 4th place in the 2017 Novice & 70m Jim Wilson Mullewa final. Skye Lankester (20m) and Virginia Stasyszyn (25.5m) should feature from the out markers. Iuan Hook (17m) was runner up in 2015 Junior Gift may look to surprise and Tony Johnson (19.5m) finished 4th in this race last year.
WCAL Hamersley 120m Open Gift
15yo Backmarker Sasha Zhoya (7m) looks to be the red hot favourite to win if he can bring out his best sprinting form. Taylor Sharpe (7.5m), Bryce Teo (8m) and Dylan Panizza (8.5m) are all hoping to outmatch his speed to also claim victory. Mid marker action should come from equal favourite Evan Jarvis (10m) and veterans Darren Rogers (13.5m) with Simon Crichton (16m) another big chance. The women’s chances may lay with multiple WA sprint champions Amy Tolcon (14m) and Taylah Cruttenden (17.5m) and the 2013 Hamersley gift winner heptathlete Kiara Reddingius (19.5m). Watch for out marker Barrie Kernaghan (40m) as he has won before off 39.5m (2015 Melville Gift).
Tony Krsticevic MLA 550m Open Gift
Scratch marker and favourite Adam Kopp (0m) will look to defend his 2016 title, it will take his best effort. Multi-talented 2017 Mullewa 550m Gift winner Sasha Zhoya (20m) deserves respect in this race as a quality runner. Mid marker action is with triple Mullewa 550m champion Kiara Reddingius (80m) and her team mates Kobi Nichols (76m), Eleanor Disselkoen (100m) and U18 State 400mChampion Ellie Nagle (86m). Also watch out for the 2015 Melville 550m Gift winner Mark Elms (88m) and fellow veteran Colin Smith (88m). Out markers Emily Parker (120m) and national heptathlete Virginia Stasyszyn (130m) could feature heavily too in this tough speed endurance race.
Top 3 placings in each final will be awarded 3, 2 & 1 point for their respective clubs. Points are totaled and the winning club will be presented the 2017/18 WCAL Championship Shield at the Annual Awards function after the conclusion of the season.

The West Coast Athletics League (Inc.) is pleased to announce Leon Burckhardt as our new handicapper. Burckhardt is currently and has been the South Australian Athletic League (Inc.) handicapper for several years and is widely regarded amongst the pros as Australia’s best. His first WA job will be the 2017 Hamersley Gift on November 25th.
The decision was made under the Australian Athletics Confederation (AAC) guidance’s push for a unified handicapping system nationwide and major gift races in all states. It is the first major move by a state pro league towards that goal.
“This is a huge step in the right direction. Our board is very excited to move towards a National System” Say’s former pro runner and WCAL Treasurer Paul Edmiston. “We are very keen to further our close relationship with the other state pro leagues. Now runners will be off the same (or a very similar) handicap when they run interstate”.
The unified national move also hopes to alleviate farcical attempts made by rebel outfits in the future.
It’s the nature of handicapped sprints that surprises are no surprise but every now and then, you can be, well, surprised.
The 2017 LiveLighter Mullewa Gift was another superbly organised West Coast Athletics event but no-one expected the winner to be unheralded 13 year Eleanor Disselkoen.
To be fair, she did show ability in her heat where, coming off 28m, she ran second to Adriaan Pelser in 12.281 seconds.
She showed it again in the semi where she won in 12.399s but no-one, Disselkoen included, expected a triumph in the final.
Fairytale stuff. She was again on 28m and front marker and jealously guarded her handicap with a fluid and balanced run.
But with the line approaching, it seemed certain Evan Jarvis, desperate to make history and be the first three time winner would track her down.
And if not Jarvis, then Kobi Nichols looked strong or fast finishing defending champ Sasha Zhoya.
Somehow she held on to win, lunging for the line and unaware her time of 12.302s was enough to hold of Jarvis (12.365s) and Nichols (12.289s).
“I didn’t see anyone else at the finish but I knew everyone was there and I didn’t think I’d won,” Disselkoen said.
“It was a big surprise, I was just happy to win the Novice Gift so, yeah, very happy.”
Disselkoen plans to continue to training under Matt Barber and improve but she’s in no rush. She’s a talent at most sports and as is the Australian way, plays as many as she can.
“I like netball, swimming, cross-country and water polo, I don’t spend much time at home.” – By Victor Tanti.
Novice meaning – you have never won a pro race final before.
PREVIEW
Defending LiveLighter Mullewa Gift champion Sasha Zhoya aims to go back to back tomorrow.
The 15 year old was Under 14 World pole vault and 110m hurdles champion and holds the National U16 200m and U17 110m hurdles and pole vault titles.
Last year he won the Gift off a 13.5m handicap, zooming home in 12.65 seconds. He also won the 70m sprint and the 120m Novice. “I’ll be happy if I make the Gift finals – anything more would be a bonus because there’s many top sprinters participating,” Zhoya said. Zhoya, whose mother Catherine lived in Morawa for several years, regards sprinting as a key part of his skill set. “Talent is one thing, but talent only is not enough – you need to train hard and be fully committed,” Zhoya said. “Sprinting is an integral part of my training but also I am not yet specialising and want to keep all options open,” he said.
In comparison, Adriaan Pelser is battling his body to be at his best but can’t be discounted for a third title. He was the Gift’s youngest winner in 2013 at 13 and the fifth dual winner in 2015. “My body isn’t how I want it to be for Mullewa, I have tight and sore muscles but I’m doing what I can,” Pelser said. “To win Mullewa three times is definitely a motivation though I always remind myself that to give my best is important, winning or not.” After being injured last year in the Gift’s preliminaries when in hot form, Pelser struggled. “After that injury, I had a bad season and during my recovery have learned about patience, following the physio’s and my coach’s advice and to listen to my body,” he said. “It took almost the whole season to recover so I’ve had to work hard over winter to get stronger and faster.”
Other contenders include 2003 and ’06 winner Evan Jarvis and Kobi Nichols who has every chance of being the fifth female champion.
Kiara Reddingius is another but her specialty is the 550m handicap which she has won three times.
Barrie Kernaghan, now 77, will be a crowd favourite and off a 40m start, can’t be ignored as he showed in 2014 when runner-up.
The sprints, which are part of the 84th Mullewa Show, start at midday with the Gift final at 4pm. – By Victor Vanti.
Interstate runners must be registered with their own state league.
