Curtin University sprinter Bryce Teo has won the Christina’s Restaurant 70m Sprint on Friday Night at the WA Athletics Stadium.
Fast starter Teo running from the mark of 4.5m came storming home in the final stages to win the $250 cash + dinner for two winner’s first prize. His time was a swift 7.43sec.
North Beach athlete Leigh Edwards (7.56sec) was runner-up with a dead heat for third between his Blues team mate Mathew Short and Gosnells Bullets speedster TJ Tarr (7.61sec). Both third placegetters managed to snatch a 0.01sec placing from Brooke Pires-Parenzee (7.62sec) of Melville Roar in fourth position.
2013 Mullewa 120m Novice winner Rhys Davies (7.67sec) came home sixth with UWA’s Thea Higginbottom (7.72sec) in seventh and Scott Russell (7.74sec) from the Roar home in eigth spot.

Tim Branston (NBA) – 8.75m. Last pro start finished 6th place in Hamersley gift heat with 12.92sec from 13.5m. 2010 WA State U18 100m Medallist. 5th place in 2012 Hamersley 120m Gift final. 4th place 2011 Hamersley 120m Gift. Winner 2012 Rockingham Gift 120m Men’s race. Should be around the mark.
April Brough (NBA) – 11m. Former NZ U18 and U20 100m and 200m Champion. 5th in 200m Final World Youth 2001. Semi-finalist in 200m World Juniors 2002. Last start was 4th in 100m and 200m Finals Australian Open Track and Field Champs 2008. Quality athlete on the comeback trail makes her Aussie pro debut.
Brittanny Brymer (NBA) – 13.5m. Surf Lifesaver finished 3rd place in 2013 Peel Novice 120m Final with 13.13sec from 26m. 5th place in 2013 Mullewa Novice Gift final. 1st place SLSWA state titles 2011 (beach sprint). 7th place at Christina’s 2012 70m Sprint heat with 8.18sec from 11m. Could be in the mix with improved form.
Daniel Cruickshank (NBA) – 7.75m. Makes his Pro debut. Talented junior sprint/jumps athlete.
Rhys Davies (NBA) – 12m. No luck 6th in heat last year 120m at WAAS 13.04sec off 21m. 70m Pro Sprint (26th Oct 2012) finished 6th place in heat with 7.95sec from 11.75m. 4th place in heat of Hamersley 120m gift with 12.81sec from 22.5m. Winner 2013 Mullewa Novice 120m final from 25m ran 12.45sec. Could be in with a shot.
Todd Edwards (SLSWA) – 6m. Surf lifesaving athlete 2012: 2nd Australian championships open beach relay, Finalist Australian Championships open beach flags. Last Pro start: 70m – 7.91sec (4.25m handicap). Has some good speed and could be a chance to final here.
Leigh Edwards (NBA) – 7.5m. Had a very good season in 2011/12 making most of the WCAL Pro finals. He was missing most of last season and has entered late for this one. Last Pro 70m race was 2012 Mullewa final when he finished 6th place in 7.72sec off 7m to winner Teo (4.75m). Could be a chance with best form.
Thea Higginbottom (UWA) – 11.25m. Talented athlete with good 100m speed (12.21sec PB) makes her Pro debut.
Jesse Huria (CUR) – 15m. 4th place in 400m at WALA state championships. Junior sprinter makes her Pro debut.
Matthew Konsolis (UWA) – 7m. 3rd in 2009 Wanneroo 120m Open Gift. 3rd in 2009 Dardanup Novice 120m Gift. Competed in 2010/11 Australian National Championships in 200m and 400m events. Last start placed 7th in Peel 70m Sprint semi-final with 8.54sec from 6.75m. Could be a chance.
Lachlan McDermott (MEL) – 6.25m. Winner 2012 Peel 20m Footballer Skins. Made this 70m Sprint Final last season finishing 5th in his first pro start (7.69sec from 6.5m). Very impressive earlier this year with win at 2013 Australian Junior Championships U16B 100m Champion 10.89sec. Should be there in the final again.
Jessica Mondello (NBA) – 12.75m. Last start was in Hamersley 120m Gift 2012 finished unplaced in heat. Looking for better run here, after a break last season.
Callum Morton-Smith (CUR) – 6.75m. Another runner entered here after two season’s break. Ran in Malaysian Open 100m earlier this year, finished unplaced in 11.8sec. Talented junior former 400m specialist. Good chance.
Adriaan Pelser (NBA) – 11m. Winner 2013 Be Active Mullewa 120m Gift. WA U14B 80m hurdles Champion. Ran 6th place in 2013 Peel 70m Sprint heat in 8.53sec from 12m. 4th place in heat of Hamersley Gift 120m with 12.89sec from 23.75m. 4th place in 2013 Kevan Hook 120m Gift with 12.37sec from 24.25m. Outside chance this time.
Brooke Pires-Parenzee (MEL) – 10.25m. 2012 Kennards Hire Rockingham Gift 120m Women’s runner up.2011 U18 Australian All Schools – 100m – Gold. 2011 U18 Australian All Schools – 200m – Gold. 2012 U20 Australian Junior – 100m – Bronze. 2012 IAAF World Juniors, Barcelona Spain – 4x100m Relay U18 Australian All Schools 100m and 200m champion. U16 100m state record holder. Very good recent from and huge junior talent could be the one to beat here.
Scott Russell (MEL) – 11.5m. 5th in final at last Christina’s 120m Gift meeting @WAAS in 12.13sec from 22.5m. Finished 6th place in Peel 70m Sprint heat from 11m ran 8.5sec. 4th place in heat of Peel 120m Gift from 20m ran 13.68sec. Chance with best form.
Mathew Short (NBA) – 5.5m. Winner of WCAL ‘Athlete of the Year’ 2012, 2012 Bay Sheffield 120m Gift was 3rd place (off 8m). 2011 Hamersley 120m Gift winner, 2011 Dardenup 120m Gift winner, Semi-finalist 2012 Stawell Gift 120m. 5th place 2013 Mullewa 120m Gift. 2012/13 100m & 200m State Open runner up. Quality Pro runner should be in the mix.
TJ Tarr (GOS) – 6.75m. Last start placed 4th in 70m heat at Mullewa from 6.25m ran 8.04sec. Then placed 4th in Mullewa 120m Novice heat from 10m ran 13.40sec. Should be more competitive with improved mark here.
Bryce Teo (CUR) – 4.5m. 2012 Mullewa 70m Sprint winner, 2013 Mullewa 70m Sprint runner-up. 2012 Ballarat Gift Finalist, 2012 Stonnington 100m Gift Finalist, 2010 Ararat 70m Open Winner. 2013 Stonnington 100m Gift runner-up. Quality Pro runner and top class sprinter will be hard to beat and should make final.
Taylor Watson (NBA) – 14.5m. Finished 2nd in heat of 70m Sprint at WAAS ran 7.81sec from 14.25m. 5th in 2012 Mullewa Gift 120m Novice Final ran 12.84sec from 28m. Runner up in 2013 Kevan Hook 120m Gift by shortest of margins 0.01sec. Chance here with best form.
Sasha Zhoya (MEL) 12m. – 2013: WALA U11B State Record 60m Hurdles, 4x100m & 4x400m.
2013 WALA Championships U11B Silver medal 100m/200m/LJ/TJ (record in TJ and equal record in 200m, but silver). 2012 State Champion in Kung Fu. Junior runner makes his Pro debut.

WA athletes competed extremely well with Gemma Grigg winning the Women’s Bay Sheffield 70m & 120m Open Sprint double… Mathew Short finished 3rd in the Bay Sheffield 120m Open Gift with Dylan Panizza a close 4th. And Cole Unasa won the backmarkers 120m Gift.
